An article in the Bellingham Herald details a 2-1 vote by council committee approving full council consideration of a proposal which would mandate inspections of rental housing in the City of Bellingham.
Under the proposal landlords would have to pay $24 per unit, per year, to cover costs for licensing and inspections. Owners of apartments and rental homes would submit a short form certifying that their properties comply with health and safety regulations.
A city staffer would be hired to conduct inspections if there are complaints from tenants or others. Some undetermined number of rental homes would be inspected at random to help encourage landlord compliance.
